BODY BALANCE: Fun summer activities for kids and adults
By Melissa Bess/Camdenton Outreach & Extension
This time of year is a great time to take advantage of the warm, sunny weather and get outdoors for activity. Turn off the television, computer, and video games and get active!
Here are some fun summer activities for kids or adults to enjoy.
Swimming offers an upper and lower body activity for those of all ages. Splash in the pool or jump in the lake for some fun with family and friends. Remember water safety, follow the rules, and use lifejackets for children. Young children can also benefit from swimming lessons.
Jumping rope can improve and enhance coordination, balance, and flexibility, and not to mention, work up a sweat! Jump ropes are inexpensive and can be done individually or in groups.
Bike riding is a fun activity for the whole family. Bike riders can enjoy a ride down a nature path or in their neighborhood. Remember to wear a helmet and watch traffic if you are pedaling by the street.
Baseball and softball are summer pastimes. Young children can start with tee ball and work up to playing ball with a pitcher. Families can get together for a casual game with very little equipment, or could purchase a waffle ball set for a small expense.
Rollerblading or inline skating are great activities when used with proper equipment, including knee pads, elbow pads, and a helmet. Skating or rollerblading are fun ways to burn calories while also improving coordination and balance.
Basketball - can be a full court competitive game, a slower pace pick-up game, or a game of horse. Just about anyone can play basketball; even young children can use a rubber ball or have the goal lowered for them. Agility, coordination, and speed can improve from playing basketball on a regular basis.
Martial arts and gymnastics are great activities for mental discipline, balance, flexibility, and strength. There are a variety of types of martial arts to pick from and different levels of gymnastics to choose from.
Dancing is a great way to burn calories while having fun! Turn up a song everyone enjoys and let children dance to their own beat. Dancing encourages kids and adults to be creative and to move freely.
Obstacle courses can be set up in the park, a playground, or at home. Children or parents can make the obstacle courses using balls, jump ropes, cones, or hula hoops. Be creative!
